Norwegian Church

Norwegian Church
Grade II listed former Norwegian Church originally located at Newport Docks was relocated to Swansea in 1910. The building comprises of a Seaman’s Mission to the west end and a single gothic church to the east end. The church was covered in scaffolding and carefully dismantled in order to restore and relocate it at the heart of the development - alongside the two other historic buildings - the distinctive red bricked J Shed and Ice House, to create a ‘story board’ of the former Swansea Docks. The renovation of the Church is now complete and will be put to the market in late 2006 for a diverse use which will add vibrancy to SA1

Ice House

Ice House

The building enjoys a prominent position overlooking the dockside. The J Shed, which has been completely renovated, incorporates a restaurant, hairdresser and an arts arcade, as well as a 20 New York-style “live and work” duplex lofts on the upper floors giving the building a rolling 24-hour life.

Sail Bridge

Sail Bridge
Sail Bridge is one of two new pedestrian/cycle bridges which form an integral part of the strategy to link the new SA1 Swansea Waterfront development with the existing Maritime Quarter and city centre. The bridge measures 142 metres long, weighs a total of 292 tonnes and features a vast 40 metre high mast. The central pier, sunk deep into the riverbed, anchors the mast in position. The sweeping design of the bridge with its curved deck, inclined central mast and radiating cables, resembles a yacht’s rigging and creates an impressive ‘sail like’ appearance linking the banks of the River Tawe. The design for the bridge was drawn up by Wilkinson Eyre Architects and the Flint & Neill Partnership, internationally renowned engineers. Wilkinson Eyre were part of the design team responsible for the famous ‘winking eye’ bridge at Gateshead and have also designed the new National Waterfront Museum which will be built at the nearby Maritime Quarter.
The Sail Bridge was awarded 1st prize in the categories of Architectural Enhancement and for Projects of a value in excess of £0.5 million at the City and County of Swansea Lord Major Design Awards.

In order to construct the bridge, it was brought in by sea in one piece on the largest floating crane barge in the UK.
