Academic collaboration in the sector is rising and the number of company spin-outs mirrors this growth / photography, data analysis at Wales Gene Park

  • The growth of the Welsh Bioscience sector has been exemplified by the number of Welsh bioscience companies that successfully spin-out from Welsh universities and become a successful part of the sector.
  • Sector breadth and capability is broad: blue chip players, GE Healthcare, Huntleigh Diagnostics and Convatec, rub shoulders with niche companies like Q-Chip and Zoobiotic.
  • Welsh Bioscience companies are growing.  Gyrus, the medical device maker, has agreed to buy American Cytoscope Maker Inc, a specialist in urological and gynaecological devices for $333m (£183m) in cash and a further $164m in debt.  This agreement will double the size of Gyrus.
  • Niche players, like Q-Chip, typically exploit profitable niche markets and sectors with innovative products and services.
  • The Welsh Assembly Government's account and project managers develop proactive relationships with companies to help them achieve their growth plans.
  • Welsh Assembly Government programmes such as 'Winning Business' and 'Fit to Win' have enabled Welsh bioscience companies, like Penn Pharmaceutical Services and Biotec Distribution, to achieve ambitious growth plans.
  • Stability and sustainability are sector 'watch-words', with enviable staff retention, motivation and skills levels. 
  • Medi-Wales, the leading professional body for the bioscience industry in Wales, actively encourages company collaboration and networking. As members of the Forum's bioscience companies collaborate to promote sector growth.  
  • Academic collaboration in the sector is on the increase and the number of company spin-outs mirrors this growth. For example, British Biocell International has gone from a University spin-out to being listed on AIM.
