Focused training for creative businesses

The Welsh Assembly Government’s strategy ‘Creative success - a strategy of the creative industries in Wales’ highlights that creative businesses need targeted help with training and skills development, to address issues such as:

  • providing training programmes that are responsive to creative businesses’ needs, including those for freelancers and new entrants.
  • developing a multi-skilled workforce.
  • providing careers advice for those thinking of entering the creative industries.
  • Such training provision will be geared to creative businesses’ specific needs. For instance, creating exploitable IP requires a range of skills, including:

  • business, finance and legal skills.
  • technical skills needed in design and production.
  • artistic and creative skills.
  • generic skills, such as communication, team working and management.
  • A partnership to develop skills

Sector skills councils are UK-wide employer-led bodies responsible for identifying and addressing the skills needs of particular sectors. Skillset and the Creative and Cultural Skills sector skills council together represent the UK’s creative industries.

Skillset Cymru and the Creative and Cultural Skills sector skills council are collaborating with the Welsh Assembly Government to satisfy the skills needs outlined in ‘Creative success - a strategy for the creative industries in Wales’.

Examples of how Skillset Cymru, the sector skills council for the audio visual industries in Wales, will achieve this include:

  • its recently launched sector skills agreement.
  • an approved film screen academy.
  • Informing the provision of industry-relevant training.
