Hurns Aim To Score High With Grand Slam Ale

Full article

Award-winning Welsh brewer, the Hurns Brewing Company has launched a new beer inspired by the Welsh rugby team’s Grand Slam triumph.

Grand Slam Ale is a ‘hoppy, bitter, golden’ ale, which says the company’s co-owner, Connie Parry, matches the “exuberance” felt by people in Wales following the national team’s win.

“We wanted to create a beer to celebrate Wales’ Grand Slam success,” said Connie whose great grandfather founded the business at the turn of the 19th century.
“Indeed my brother was so confident Wales would win he wanted to go ahead before the last game. But we decided to wait until the final whistle in case we jinxed things!”

With an ABV of 4.7% Grand Slam Ale is available on draught at the brewery’s pubs.
The Swansea based family-owned company produces a range of beers under the Tomos Watkin brand, and has 20 pubs across South West Wales, including The Robin Hood and Clarence in Swansea, The Crofty Inn in Penclawdd, Kings Arms in Haverfordwest and PS Bar in Bridgend.

Grand Slam Ale joins the True Taste award-winning company’s portfolio of bottled beers in the Tomos Watkin range as well as the increasingly popular Taffy Apples Cider and several seasonal varieties of cask ale, such as, Cwrw Haf, Cwrw Santa and Dewi Sant.

Hurns has enjoyed a great deal of brewing success, last October the brewery’s Magic Lagyr (lager) came out as the Tesco 2008 Wales regional winner in a blind tasting of new Welsh bottled beers.  While in addition to True Taste awards there have been numerous CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) awards for its cask conditioned ales.

The company’s beers and reputation are spreading well beyond Wales. The brewery’s beers recently went on sale in all 50 states in the USA, and a recent export deal has been struck with Denmark - a country renowned for its own brewing industry.

In addition following Hurns’ attendance at last month’s Alimentaria International Food and Drink exhibition in Barcelona, where the company exhibited under the Welsh Assembly Government’s International Business Wales and True Taste banner, the company has secured its first export order from Spain.
