Junior Judges Delight in Daioni At Excellence Awards

Full article

A Welsh dairy company whose organic flavoured milk drinks were designed for children has won an award for excellence judged by a panel of 5 to 12 year-olds.

Trioni Ltd, which produces the Daioni range of organic flavoured milk, was named best children’s drink in the Excellence in Food Awards run by The Caterer and Hotelkeeper magazine.

The annual awards recognise excellence in products aimed at the food service industry and is judged by top chefs and food critics. The 3663 sponsored children’s category is also judged by a junior panel who enthused about the chocolate Daioni saying it had a “nice flavour, thick and bubbly”.

Pembrokeshire based Trioni developed its Daioni (‘goodness’ in Welsh) range of organic milk drinks as an alternative to the fizzy sugary drinks generally available for children, and launched them in 2003.

“Winning this award is particularly gratifying for us as Daioni was designed for children and so to be chosen by the junior judges means we have achieved what we set out to do,” said Trioni’s co-founder and managing director, Laurence Harris.

“Our initial taste trials were conducted in schools in Pembrokeshire, and so we have come full circle,” said Teleri Thomas, Trioni’s Marketing Manager who received the award from celebrity chef Aldo Zilli at the awards ceremony held at The Dorchester Hotel in London (November 23).

Low in fat with no artificial colours or preservatives, the drinks are available in four flavours - chocolate, strawberry, banana, and cranberry & raspberry.

It has been a good year for the family-run business. It picked up a gold medal at the 2007 Great Taste Awards, and was recently successful in its bid to be included in the framework contract for the Welsh Purchasing Consortium - which handles procurement for unitary authorities across South Wales - and Daioni will be available in schools across Swansea and Neath Port Talbot with the potential to be used by all 12 councils.

Last week the True Taste award-winning company was at the BBC Good Food Show in Birmingham as part of the Welsh Assembly Government’s True Taste Stand where the drinks were on sale to thousands of visitors.

“Winning any award is great for our company as it is an independent endorsement of our products, “says Teleri.

The company has received a variety of assistance and is participating in the True Food Marketing scheme, which is supported by the Welsh Assembly Government.

Among Daioni’s fans are the Welsh Rugby Union and several top rugby clubs along with Tottenham Hotspur football club, and it is available across the UK as well as in Greece, Malta, Cyprus and Australia.
