West Wales Waffles head for Waitrose

Full article

West Wales bakers, Tregroes Waffles, have been teasing taste-buds for nearly a quarter of a century, now the company is to make its first foray into the multiple retailer market following a deal to supply Waitrose stores nationwide.

The secret of the Ceredigion company’s success is simple - two thin waffled wafers filled with glorious, slightly spiced toffee. They are the perfect accompaniment to a cup of tea or coffee or can be used in a variety of recipes.

A popular and established part of the food festival and market scene across Wales, Tregroes Waffles retail across the UK - under Tregroes and own-brand labels - as well as exporting to New York.

Flagship retailers such as Fortnum & Mason, Harvey Nichols, Selfridges stock Tregroes Waffles, but this is the first time a supermarket has listed the product UK-wide.

Said Tregroes Managing Director, Kees Huysmans, “It is an exciting time for Tregroes Waffles; the deal with Waitrose is testament to the many years of hard work and commitment put in by all at the company.”

It all started in November 1983 when Kees Huysmans made toffee waffles for a Guy Fawkes party. Now the family-run business operates from bespoke premises in Llandysul producing up to 4,000 Waffles per hour and employing around 15 people.

From the original plain toffee waffle - which can be eaten warm or cold - the range has expanded to include waffles covered in dark or milk chocolate. Free from nuts, sesame seeds or genetically modified ingredients the waffles do not contain artificial colourings or flavourings and are suitable for vegetarians.

Said Sales and Marketing Manager, Susan Berry, “Tregroes Waffles has built up a steady and faithful client base, and we are delighted our waffles are now going to be available in Waitrose stores nationwide.”
