National Awards Adds Extra Sparkle For Welsh Wine Producer

Full article

A Welsh vineyard is celebrating after winning four out of four awards at the English and Welsh Wine of the Year awards.

Wine has been produced by Parva Farm Vineyard near Tintern in Monmouthshire by Judith and Colin Dudley since 1997, the vineyard having been planted in 1979 by the previous owners.

The annual awards, which are organised by the UK Vineyard Association, recognise the best wines in England and Wales, with the awards presented at a reception at the House of Lords by Lord Montagu of Beaulieu.

Parva Farm Vineyard was awarded silver for its ‘off-dry’ white wine, Tintern Parva Bacchus 06. A bronze award went to the vineyard’s medium white wine, Tintern Parva Ty Gwyn 06, which is blended from Muller Thurgau and Seyval Blanc grapes.

A further bronze was awarded to the sparkling Tintern Parva Dathliad Rosé 06, and the sparkling white, Tintern Parva Dathliad 04 was Highly Commended by the seven judges who are all Masters of Wine.

“We are delighted with the awards, we entered four wines and came away with four awards,” said Judith Dudley who also organises the annual Welsh Wine Week.

“It is particularly pleasing as we hadn’t entered any sparkling wines before. English and Welsh sparkling wines are getting to be on a par with champagne and it is nice to have some awards for them.

“There aren’t many vineyards in Wales but Welsh wines are starting to get recognition and people are realising that Welsh wine is just as good as from elsewhere.”

Said Judith, “We are also delighted that our wine-maker Martin Fowke from Three Choirs Vineyard was also named Wine Maker of the Year at the awards.”
