British Cheese Week was very successful for Welsh cheese makers who were among the top trophy winners at the British Cheese Awards.
The *annual awards saw 867 cheeses entered from 175 cheese makers, with 98 entries from Wales.
The Best Welsh Cheese title, sponsored by the Welsh Assembly Government, and the Dougal Campbell Trophy went to Abergavenny Fine Foods’ Pantysgawn Organic. The Monmouthshire company also picked up two gold and three bronze medals for its cheeses.
“It is an honour to win an award that is in memory of one of Wales’s best known cheese-makers, Dougal Campbell,” said Bryson Craske, Abergavenny Fine Foods’ Commercial Director. “It further shows there is still an awful lot of quality artisanal cheese-making in Wales.”
Referring to the difficult times faced by farmers and the need for consumers to support Welsh products, Mr Craske continued, “In a period of time where milk prices are going through the roof and producers are going out of business for cheese-making to survive people need to recognise the true cost of production and support them accordingly.”
Also among the award-winners was Teifi Farmhouse Cheese for its Teifi with Nettles which was named Best Flavour Added Cheese. The Llandysul company also scored gold, silver, and two bronze in the medals. While cheese consultant Eurwen Richards from Bridgend was named as Cheese Person of the Year.
Other Welsh cheese makers who took home medals were: Caws Cenarth, The First Milk Cheese Company, Carmarthenshire Cheese Company, Llanboidy Cheesemakers, Quirt Farm, and Llandyrnog Creamery.
